Spring Into Mindfulness: Fun + Simple Ways To Teach Kids Gratitude

Shea Avatar

Spring is a season of renewal, growth, and fresh possibilities, making it the perfect time to introduce kids to mindfulness and gratitude in ways that feel natural and fun. As a mom, I love finding little ways to help my children slow down and appreciate the world around them—whether it’s planting a tiny seed and watching it grow or taking a deep breath of fresh spring air. These small moments of mindfulness not only bring joy but also help instill a lifelong sense of gratitude and awareness.

Here are some simple yet meaningful activities to help children connect with themselves, nature, and the magic of the season.

1. Gratitude Nature Walk

Step outside and soak in the beauty of spring with a gratitude walk! Give your little ones a small notebook or sketchpad and encourage them to notice and record (or draw) the things in nature that bring them joy. Maybe it’s the way a butterfly flutters past, the scent of fresh blossoms in the air, or the warmth of the sun on their skin.

Taking a mindful walk helps kids slow down, appreciate the little wonders around them, and cultivate gratitude for the world they’re a part of. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to spend intentional time together as a family!

2. Planting ‘Wish Seeds’

Gardening is a wonderful way to teach patience, care, and the magic of growth. Have your child plant a flower, vegetable, or herb and set an intention with it. As they place the seed in the soil, they can make a wish or say a positive affirmation like, “I am growing just like this plant.” Watching their little plant sprout and flourish over time reinforces the idea that positive thoughts and care can lead to beautiful results.

3. Spring Vision Boards

Vision boards help kids dream big while getting creative! Provide them with magazines, scissors, glue, and colorful paper to create a collage of things they want to do, see, or achieve this season. Whether it’s learning a new skill, exploring nature, or spending time with family, this activity encourages goal-setting and positive thinking in a fun, hands-on way.

4. Mindful Breathing with Spring Scents

Help kids tune into their senses and practice mindful breathing by using the scents of spring. Take them outside and encourage them to close their eyes, take a deep breath, and notice the fresh grass, blooming flowers, or even the smell of rain in the air. You can also introduce essential oils like lavender or lemon for a more calming experience.

→→→ Try a kid-safe essential oil set
→→→ Get an aromatherapy diffuser for a soothing bedtime routine

5. Gratitude Jar for Sunny Days

Encourage kids to create a gratitude jar to celebrate the little moments that bring them joy. Have them decorate a jar and fill it with slips of paper, writing down things they’re grateful for each day—like playing outside, spotting a butterfly, or sharing a special snack with a friend. At the end of spring, they can read through their notes and reflect on all the happy memories they’ve collected.

Moving our bodies in a mindful way is a great way to connect with nature and feel more present. My kids and I love doing simple yoga poses like Tree Pose, Butterfly Pose, and Sun Salutation while feeling the warmth of the sun and the grass beneath our feet. Practicing yoga outdoors helps them feel strong, balanced, and calm—plus, it’s a fun way to start the day with positive energy!
